Aghia Galini

Here’s a taste of a typical road ride in Crete
125Km
2500 climbing
The road surface is usually pretty smooth with occasional big potholes.
The main peaks in the centre of the island are 2500 metres. The villages at the base of the mountains sit on a road that circles them between 300 and 750 metres and there is brilliant road riding here. From my land to the mountain road is 15 – 20 miles. This ride goes up to the mountain villages and then across to some smaller mountains overlooking the South coast.

On the way up.

The snow is getting closer.

Recce some mountain bike tracks for future use.

Looking across to where I’ll be this afternoon .
The route goes down into the valley right foreground, before climbing halfway up the mountain right background and around its flank. Then it drops into the valley centre background before climbing to Melambes which is a village you should just be able to see perched left background.

Looking back to the villages I rode through this morning.

The road then follows around a col and you get this view down to the sea.
From there you have another 15 miles of less spectacular but hard riding to get home.
